How to start Kundalini Yoga?

The complete guide to begin: benefits, preparation, a typical class and FAQ.

What is Kundalini yoga?

A practice of energy, accessible to all

Kundalini yoga is sometimes called “the yoga of awareness”. It does not only aim to make the body flexible: it works on vital energy and the mind, combining postures, breathing (pranayama), mantras and meditation.

The goal? To awaken your inner energy, calm the mind and regain vitality. The key point: you need no experience. Kundalini addresses the body and mind as they are today.

Getting ready

The 6 essentials for your first class

👕

Comfortable clothes

To move and sit cross-legged, staying at ease.

🧘

A yoga mat

A classic non-slip mat is enough for the practice.

🛋️

A cushion or blanket

To be comfortable seated and in relaxation.

💧

Some water

Breathing and practice can make you thirsty: keep water close.

🧣

A headband or cloth

Optional but useful for breathing exercises.

🏠

A calm place

At home or in a group class, a space without distraction.

The flow

Structure of a typical class

A reassuring thread

  • 1. Centring: settle in, connect to your breath
  • 2. The Kriya: a sequence of exercises (postures, breath, movement)
  • 3. Breathing: pranayamas to energise or release
  • 4. Chant/mantras: to anchor attention and open energy
  • 5. Deep relaxation: a time of integration
  • 6. Closing: gently return to yourself
To avoid

3 beginner mistakes to avoid

Forcing postures: Kundalini is not a flexibility competition. You work with your body, never against it.

Trying to “empty the mind”: meditation is not the absence of thoughts, it is observing them without clinging.

Practising alone too long without a guide: to learn the basics (breath, rhythm, safety), a class with an experienced teacher is precious.

3 beginner mistakes to avoid
Consistency matters more than duration. 2 to 3 sessions of 20–30 minutes a week are enough to feel an effect.
